I love this Blog!

For those of you who teach your classes with a message…
For those who are constantly searching for the right blend of words to not just convey an action but a feeling…
For those who do these things, but find yourself without the right words from time to time…

…have I got a blog for you!!! (I mean, besides this one! LOL)

I just read STAR 3 Spinning Instructor Melissa Marotta’s Spinning Blog. Whoa. She spills her guts on pretty much every page, and leaves lots of gems along the way. Her posts are long, but reading even just one of them left me with tons of content for reaching out to my students on a deeper level than just “sweat, baby, sweat!” I am even going to apply some of her trains of thought to my Pilates and Yoga classes. I think you’ll like this resource, too. She’s going on the blogroll.

From Great to Extra-Ordinary!

By Biray Alsac

What makes a great instructor an extra-ordinary one? While there isn’t a golden answer to this question, there are certainly things every instructor should do. For extra ideas, you can learn from other successful colleagues and fitness professionals around the world. Last week I was an invited guest at FitnessTurk 2008, a conference for fitness professionals based in Istanbul, Turkey. In my down time, I attended a session facilitated by Lawrence Biscontini, an international presenter and extra-ordinary instructor, himself!

Motivating the Fitness Newbie

Another great contribution by guest blogger, Biray Alsac!

It’s refreshing to meet a gym member who is a ‘first-timer’ to a health club or a newbie to our group exercise classes. You know the ones – they aren’t very fitness-savvy, are overwhelmed by the classes available on the schedule, and aren’t entirely familiar with gym culture. But, bless their hearts, they are open to trying something new.

As instructors, we love these people. Why? Because it gives us an opportunity to dispel any myths about group exercise and a chance to create an experience that will hopefully motivate them to come back for more – not scare them away.

Amazing story of sportsmanship

This is, to me, one of the most moving stories of athleticism I’ve read in a while: http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2008/04/the_best_tale_of_sportsmanship.html

I hope you find some inspiration in there to pass along as you continue working to make the world a better place!

Best wishes,
Krista

Resolutionary Results for a Happy New Year!

You really can’t say the words “New Year” without that sneaky word ”Resolutions” floating up in the back of your mind or escaping your lips.  Ah, yes, New Year’s Resolutions.  What would be the point of celebrating a whole new year if we didn’t all experience the anticipation and hope that a fresh start brings?  “Get busy living or get busy dying,” right?  If a New Year is what it takes to get you into gear, then bring on the power!

Spinning Profile: 90-Minute Endurance Ride

This is a Spinning Profile for a ride that totals 80 minutes on the bike plus 10 minutes of stretching for a 90 minute profile.  I got my students up extra early one morning for this ride that went over really well.  Because the ride was a first for them and for me as an instructor, I kept it very simple and mostly motivational.  Also, I didn’t want them to fall asleep, so half-way through, the profile changes from a EEZ to a SEZ. Therefore, “Endurance” in the title really only means “able to endure the bike for a long time.”

Here are the playlist and profile, updated to include song links on iTunes and Napster. I hope this new format helps you with your planning and song-obtaining! After the profile, I have included a series of motivational cues to get you through the ride.
