Florida MANIA

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I had the pleasure of spending three days in sun-drenched Orlando, Florida for the SCW Fitness Conference called Florida MANIA. I am pleased to report that not only did it outperform my expectations, but it actually gave me a reason not to be sad that I was unable to attend the concurrent WSSC Convention in Miami. Gas prices what they are, I had to stay closer to home this year, and I am glad that I did. I received a wide-variety of information that will not only satify my CEU requirements for most of my certifications, I learned new things in each of the areas that I went to study.

In order to provide you with the best possible review of the conference, I am going to share with you my responses to the convention survey and fill in every detail that I possibly can!

See You In Florida…

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Hey folks!  I mentioned in a previous post the discount you can get on SCW Fitness MANIA events through PT on the Net.  Just wanted to update you and invite you to join me in Orlando, FL May 30-Jun 1 for the Florida MANIA.  There are so many conferences each year, and it can be difficult to decide which one you should attend, if any.  The cost goes far beyond registration fees, you might have to pay for transportation, hotels, and food, not to mention wanting to load up on vendor goodies.  This year, I opted for a conference close to home and where I can visit family rather than stay in a hotel.  The workshops look interesting, and I’ll take care of nearly all the CEU’s I need for each of my certs in one stop.

I encourage you to check it out and if you decide to register, drop me a line.  I would love to have a chance to thank you in person for visiting this site!

Discounted Continuing Education Credits

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

My recent PT on the Net box office alert let me know that for the next couple of weeks, I can sign up for California or Florida MANIA at the discounted PT on the NET member price of $183.22.* Right now on the SCW website they have early bird specials of $229.  This is an excellent price for a 3-day conference that will award me enough CEU’s to recertify with both AFAA and NASM.  The cycling workshops are presented by Schwinn, so I will have to petition MDA for STAR points, but at this price you can’t beat it.

AFAA Apex Weekend: Feb 8-10

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

AFAA is having another APEX weekend in February.  Its a great way to get certified, recertified or earn CEU’s for cheap.  If you live near or can get to a city where they’re hosting, it’s definitely worth it.  Even if you spend $100 on a hotel, you still get a cert for $100 less than the usual cost!  :)

Here’s a list of the cities they’ll be in February:

Steps to Getting AFAA Certified: Post #5: Practical Exam Part II

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Finally!!  The last post in the AFAA certification series.  If I’ve been a little long-winded, I apologize, but you never know what piece of information will be helpful to which person.  Thanks for making it this far in the series.   If you’d like to check out the previous posts, they are here:  Post 1Post 2Post 3Post 4.

MUSCLE GROUP DEMONSTRATIONS

This topic is covered in great detail during the workshop.  A presenter will take you through each muscle group and demonstrate several options for exercises you can perform for the demo.  You can also come up with a game plan prior to the workshop and use that opportunity to confirm that your choices are acceptable.  Here, we won’t discuss exercises you’ll do for this group, only what is expected during testing.

Steps to Getting AFAA Certified

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

A week and a half ago, I went to the APEX event for AFAA to recertify my Primary Group Certification.  A friend of mine had indicated interest in becoming Group Exercise certified, so I recruited her to come along, since a normally $299 certification only costs $99 during the APEX weekend.   Can’t argue with a deal like that.  So she and I set off from our homes in Charleston, SC to attend the Charlotte, NC event.  If you don’t count the ordeals we suffered, such as getting lost because Google Maps didn’t mention one of the roads necessary to find our hotel, or the fact that the hotel appeared to be on fire when we arrived, the trip and workshop made for a great weekend.  I especially enjoyed having my “newbie” friend with me, because it allowed me to experience a different side to mentorship.  It is one thing to coach a client or a student in your class, and another thing entirely to help that person become a coach or teacher.   After observing the experience from the perspective of someone totally brand new to the certification game, I realized that a step-by-step guide would probably be of help to more than just my friend.  So here is the start of a series of posts meant to help you get the most out of the AFAA certification process.
